Forest School and Outdoor Learning

At Jessie Younghusband Primary School, we believe that some of the most memorable learning takes place beyond the classroom. Through Forest School and outdoor learning experiences, children develop confidence, resilience, independence and a deeper understanding of the world around them.

Forest School provides opportunities for children to learn through exploration, practical experiences and carefully managed risk-taking in a natural environment. We want children to develop a strong connection with nature whilst building important life skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, creativity and perseverance.

Through Forest School activities, children have opportunities to:

  • Explore the natural environment.
  • Develop confidence and self-esteem.
  • Learn to work collaboratively with others.
  • Build resilience and independence.
  • Develop problem-solving and leadership skills.
  • Learn to assess and manage risk appropriately.
  • Apply learning from the classroom in a real-world context.
  • Develop curiosity and a sense of wonder about the world around them.

Alongside Forest School, children participate in a range of outdoor learning experiences linked to the wider curriculum. These may include map work, compass skills, environmental studies, science investigations, nature-based art, den building, team challenges and practical problem-solving activities.

Our New Forest School Area

Since moving to our new school site, we have begun an exciting journey to develop a dedicated Forest School and outdoor learning environment that reflects the needs and interests of our children.

This project is being developed in partnership with our school community, including pupils, staff, governors, parents and our fantastic PTA, JYS Friends. We believe it is important that children play a key role in shaping the area and helping us create a space that inspires learning, creativity and exploration.

As the site continues to develop, we are excited about the opportunities it will provide for future generations of JYS children. Our vision is to create a high-quality outdoor environment that supports wellbeing, environmental awareness, curriculum learning and personal development.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Outdoor learning supports many areas of the curriculum, including science, geography, mathematics, art, design technology and personal development. It also provides valuable opportunities for children to develop communication, teamwork and leadership skills.

We believe that children learn best when they are actively engaged, challenged and inspired. Forest School and outdoor learning help us bring learning to life, fostering curiosity, independence and a lifelong appreciation of the natural world.
