Statement of Curriculum Intent
At Jessie Younghusband Primary School, our curriculum is designed to inspire and nurture the individuality of every child, enabling them to develop the knowledge, skills and personal qualities they need to flourish both now and in the future.
Rooted in our values of Aspire, Respect and Enjoy, we aim to create confident, resilient and ambitious learners who are prepared for their next stage of education and equipped to make a positive contribution to society. We want all children to leave JYS with a love of learning, a strong sense of self-belief and the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in an ever-changing world.
Our Curriculum Vision
We believe that every child deserves access to a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum that promotes high achievement whilst recognising and celebrating individual strengths, interests and talents.
Our curriculum is designed to:
- Develop secure knowledge and skills across all areas of learning.
- Foster curiosity, creativity and a lifelong love of learning.
- Build confidence, resilience and independence.
- Promote high aspirations and achievement for all pupils.
- Ensure equality of opportunity and inclusion for every child.
- Help pupils develop respect for themselves, others and the wider world.
- Prepare children to become responsible and active citizens.
A Broad and Enriching Curriculum
We believe that children learn best when learning is engaging, purposeful and relevant. Our curriculum combines the requirements of the National Curriculum with a wide range of enrichment opportunities that broaden children's experiences and deepen their understanding of the world.
Learning is enhanced through:
- Educational visits and visitors.
- Outdoor and environmental learning opportunities.
- Forest School experiences.
- Links with local organisations and the wider community.
- Sporting events and competitions.
- Performing arts opportunities.
- Leadership roles and pupil voice initiatives.
- Cultural and creative experiences.
- Residential visits and enrichment activities.
Through these experiences, we aim to inspire children, develop their character and help them discover new interests and talents.
Early Years Foundation Stage
In Reception, children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum within a rich, nurturing and stimulating environment.
Learning through play is combined with carefully planned teaching that develops children's communication, language, physical development, personal and social skills, and early academic understanding. We want our youngest learners to be curious, confident and enthusiastic as they begin their educational journey.
National Curriculum
From Year 1 to Year 6, pupils follow the National Curriculum. Learning is carefully sequenced to ensure that knowledge and skills build progressively over time, enabling children to make strong progress across all subjects.
We aim for children to develop a deep understanding of what they learn and to make meaningful connections between subjects wherever appropriate. High expectations, adaptive teaching and effective assessment support all pupils to achieve success.
Inclusion and Equality
At Jessie Younghusband Primary School, we are committed to providing an inclusive curriculum that meets the needs of all learners.
We believe that every child can succeed and we work hard to remove barriers to learning wherever they exist. Through adaptive teaching, targeted support and a strong understanding of individual needs, we ensure that all children, including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), can access and participate fully in school life.
Our curriculum promotes equality, celebrates diversity and helps children understand and respect people from different backgrounds, cultures and experiences.
Our Community and Environment
We are proud of our strong community ethos and make full use of the rich opportunities available within Chichester and the surrounding area. We want children to develop a sense of belonging within their local community while also understanding their role as global citizens.
Environmental sustainability is an important part of our curriculum. Through our work on environmental projects, Eco Schools initiatives and outdoor learning opportunities, we encourage children to develop a respect for the natural world and an understanding of how they can make a positive difference.
Physical Development and Wellbeing
We recognise the important link between physical activity, wellbeing and successful learning. We therefore place a strong emphasis on physical education, sport, outdoor activity and healthy lifestyles.
All children are encouraged to participate in a range of sporting opportunities, develop positive attitudes towards physical activity and experience both personal achievement and teamwork.
Assessment
Assessment is an integral part of teaching and learning at Jessie Younghusband Primary School. Teachers regularly assess children's understanding and progress to identify strengths, address misconceptions and inform future learning.
This ongoing assessment enables us to provide appropriate challenge and support, ensuring that every child continues to make progress and achieve their full potential.
Aspire • Respect • Enjoy
At Jessie Younghusband Primary School, our curriculum is much more than a collection of subjects. It is a carefully planned journey that equips children with the knowledge, skills, values and experiences they need to thrive in school, contribute positively to society and enjoy a lifetime of learning.
