What makes Jessie Younghusband School?
At Jessie Younghusband School (JYS), we thread our school values – Aspire, Respect, Enjoy – throughout our curriculum. We believe that learning should be a rewarding and enjoyable experience for everyone. Through our teaching, we collectively create a stimulating environment which fosters excitement and enthusiasm for learning. We constantly strive to improve our provision for children at JYS and in doing so encourage everyone to aim high and try to achieve their full potential. High importance is also placed upon the children developing skills to reflect upon their learning, thus enabling them to make good progress in all areas of learning – academically, physically, socially and emotionally. Pupils gain high levels of confidence, have pride in their achievements and really enjoy their learning. We recognise that the personal development of children - spiritually, morally, socially and culturally (SMSC) - plays a significant role in their ability to learn, achieve and be happy individuals.
Aspire ~ Respect ~ Enjoy
Vision Statement
At Jessie Younghusband School our vision is to inspire and nurture the individuality of every member of our school community. We aim to fully support each pupil to achieve success at all stages of their life by instilling confidence, resilience and ambition through our shared values.
Aspire ~ Respect ~ Enjoy.
The staff and governors of Jessie Younghusband School believe that the school should:
- Have high expectations for all pupils to fully engage with their education and to develop a lifelong love of learning;
- Provide a happy and safe environment where everyone is valued and feels listened to;
- Seek to achieve good relationships with all those involved in the school through mutual respect and open and honest communication;
- Encourage everyone to aim high and try to achieve their full potential, in all areas of learning in academic work, the arts, sport, behaviour and attitudes;
- Deliver a broad and rich curriculum which provides all learners with equality of opportunity, to be challenged and to make good progress as learners in a range of subjects and contexts;
- Provide a modern and bespoke curriculum that is adapted to suit children at JYS and prepare them for living in a technological society;
- Collectively create a stimulating, vibrant learning environment which fosters inclusion and an excitement and enthusiasm for learning;
- Encourage active participation and involvement in our local community and an appreciation of our place in the wider world including issues facing global citizens now and in the future.
The Governors and staff work closely together to secure the school’s continuing development, the direction of which, is set out in our Three Year Strategic Plan and the detailed annual School Development Plan. A summary of the annual priorities is available on this website.
OFSTED inspected the school in February 2019 and judged the school to be a ‘Good’ school. The comments and detail provided in the report shows that the school is securely ‘Good’ and is working on appropriate priorities for further improvement.
We believe that our strong school community is a key feature of our school and this is strengthened by the close partnership we have with parents and other local schools. We are also proud of the broad and rich curriculum that we offer which we hope gives every child the inspiration and opportunities they need for future success.
At JYS we teach all our children to respect and care for others. We set very high expectations of courtesy and manners, and work together to resolve problems when they occur.
We encourage our children to realise their potential and to grow in confidence. We expect them to try their hardest in all they do. This is a model which is also set by the adults in the school. It is a pleasure and a privilege to work with the children of our school.
School Organisation
At Jessie Younghusband School pupils are currently placed in a class with children of the same age. Classes are therefore arranged in mixed ability groups and pupils’ abilities are stretched or supported through differentiation of activity or level of expectation. There is one class in each year group, and this year we have had 212 pupils in the school since September.
Children are taught, for most of the time, by their own class teacher or class-share partnership. There are a few other times when they may be taught by other members of staff, including our Deputy Headteacher. This includes teachers’ 10% Planning, Preparation and Assessment time, when attending courses, or when undertaking other duties or responsibilities. We work closely with additional members of supply staff to ensure that learning is continuous and enhanced by such provision. Other support staff include many highly-skilled teaching assistants who provide extra help or individual attention to encourage or challenge pupils appropriately.
